Lorsque la cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartres a été inscrite au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO, j'avais 13 ans. Je commençais un loisir qui allait devenir très vite une passion, pour en faire aujourd'hui depuis plus de trente ans mon métier. J'ai la très grande chance, au fil des commandes professionnelles, de photographier des lieux extraordinaires. Mais la cathédrale est différente. Je vis à Chartres et je fréquente ce monument régulièrement ; au fil des heures, des travaux, de la lumière, il y a beaucoup à regarder sans aucune lassitude.

Sélectionner quarante images parmi plus de cinq mille impose des choix : points de vue inédits, lumières furtives, ou tout simplement magie des proportions, avec comme point commun le fait de prendre le temps, de se « poser », dans un monde virtuel où tout va très (trop) vite. Ce monument nous ramène à une certaine temporalité. Il s'agit avant tout d'un patrimoine vivant qu'il faut entretenir et préserver, puisse cet ouvrage y contribuer dans sa mesure.

I was thirteen years old when the Cathedral of Our Lady of Chartres was first listed as a UNESCO world heritage site. At this age, I discovered a hobby that would soon become a passion and eventually turn into what has now been a thirty-year career. In the context of my work, I have had the immense privilege of photographing extraordinary places. But this cathedral is different. I live in Chartres and often visit this monument ; there is so much to see, depending on the time of day, the light, and the restoration works performed, that one never tires of looking.

Selecting forty images from a body of more than five thousand has meant making choices : surprising perspectives, fleeting light, or simply the magic of proportions. But what these different images share is the fact of taking time and « settling in »,in contrast to a (too) fast-moving virtual world. This monument reminds us of another conception of time. Above all, it is a living legacy that should be maintained and preserved. It is my hope that this book can contribute to that legacy.
